EDUCATION
With over two decades of experience, Richard Smith is a distinguished dance educator, choreographer, and adjudicator, renowned for his expertise in classical, lyrical, and contemporary jazz, ballet, and modern dance. With a strong connection to Giordano Jazz Dance Technique and certified in the Nan Giordano Certification Program, his teaching reflects the heart and soul of the artistry and athletics of American Jazz Dance. As the Owner of Chroma Dance Competition—a premier, inclusive platform that emphasizes positivity and education—and the visionary behind the 360° Dance Festival, Richard continues to shape the landscape of dance education by creating inspiring spaces for dancers, teachers, and choreographers to grow.

EXPERIENCE
A seasoned instructor, Richard served on the faculty at the esteemed Gus Giordano Dance Center for six years and at Joel Hall Dancers and Center for three years, and has collaborated with internationally acclaimed companies such as Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago and River North Dance Chicago. His professional journey began with a BFA in Dance Performance and Education from East Carolina University, followed by advanced training with the legendary Gus Giordano, for whom he also had the privilege to travel and demonstrate.
Richard’s influence spans all age groups, with a unique connection to pre-teen dancers who he believes are most receptive to learning the essential principles of dance. His teaching extends beyond the studio to universities across the country, including East Carolina University, Western Michigan University, Elon University, and Duke University. Richard's students are often accepted into elite programs and have gone on to dance with industry icons such as Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, and Justin Bieber, with one former student recently winning a prestigious Jeff Award for a lead role in "Billy Elliot."
